I spent a long and wonderful Saturday afternoon in late January with the children of Still Waters, the day after Donald Trump put his immigration ban into effect. They were bright and they were curious and they were intense and, most important, they were not, let me tell you, about to let Trump get in the way of the lives they are determined to lead in America. Week in and week out, Stephen Haff comes to this sacred space in Bushwick and, with these talented children, makes it common ground. As every teacher who is honest about such things knows, we learn far more from our students than we can ever impart to them.
