Still Waters in a Storm is everything that is good and right in this world—a place for children to love books and begin to test their voices as young writers. I was lucky enough to join them for a day of reading and writing. I was lucky to see them do what all of us who write do—stare at the page, cross out some words till we land on a right word and follow that word to the next and the next. Then one by one, with excitement and nervousness, they read their stories and poems to one another. And the children responded thoughtfully to each reading by noticing what was beautiful, vulnerable, and moving in each story or poem. What a gift it was to be invited to join this program for an afternoon.
